Who is Uýra?
UÝRA (she/her) was born in Santarém/PA in 1991. She now lives and works in Manaus/AM.
Primarily engaged in performance and photoperformance, UÝRA weaves stories using the body as a canvas, intertwining the realms of encounter and difference between the forest and the city, woven together by scientific and ancestral knowledge. Some of her research and production interests oscillate across fields such as the multiple natures of worlds, their origins and impacts as sociocultural and political imaginaries, the disappearance and resurgence of life, and indigenous diaspora.
With a degree in Biology and a Master's in Amazon Ecology, UÝRA has held solo exhibitions in institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art in Rio de Janeiro (MAM/RJ), Kunstraum Innsbruck (Austria), and the Currier Museum of Art (United States). A highlighted artist at the 34th São Paulo Biennial, Manifesta! Biennial (Kosovo), 13th São Paulo Architecture Biennial, and the 1st Biennial of the Amazons, they were a winner of the EDP Arts Prize (Tomie Ohtake Institute), the PIPA Prize 2022, the SIM Racial Equality Prize 2023, and the FOCO ArtRio Prize 2023. Their works are held in collections such as those of the Pinacoteca of São Paulo, Instituto PIPA, Castello de Rivoli (Italy), Institute for Studies on Latin American Art (ISLAA), Currier Museum of Art, and Los Angeles County Museum of Art (USA).
